a New Year’s Eve
4 Min ReadHONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong protesters made long human chains and marched through shopping malls on New Year’s Eve, urging people not to give up the fight for democracy in 2020, while police were out in force across the city to quell any unrest. “For us it’s not really New Year’s Eve. We have to resist every day.” As evening fell, hundreds of masked protesters, many dressed in black and waving flags with pro-democracy slogans, stood together forming long chains along sidewalks in several neighborhoods in the Chinese-ruled city. The New Year demonstrations follow a pick-up in clashes since Christmas Eve, when riot police fired tear gas at thousands of protesters following scuffles in shopping malls and in a prime tourist district.
