He said showing a Black Navy pilot with other diverse pilots on the big screen is an important milestone.“When I saw the first ‘Top Gun,’ obviously there was one Black character, Sundown, but I don’t think he was represented as fully as he could have been,” he said. When asked about the call sign Warlock given to his character in “Top Gun: Maverick,” Parnell said he came up with his own explanation.“I think that character was in the original ‘Top Gun,’ and he flew with that class.
