The automotive and medical industries have been disproportionately impacted by the shortage.In a press briefing accompanying the findings, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo described the issue in stark terms, noting, “We aren’t even close to being out of the woods as it relates to the supply problems with semiconductors.” She added that the crunch is likely to last into the second half of the year — if not longer.Raimondo urged Congress to pass the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (USICA) currently being drafted by the House, citing its inclusion of $52 billion in funding to ramp up domestic semiconductor production.The study notes that demand increased 17% from 2019 to 2021 — a number that’s only going to grow.
