Now Williams—through her firm Serena Ventures—has invested in Mahmee, a startup working to end the maternal mortality crisis affecting black women in the United States. “Given the bleak data surrounding maternal death and injury rates, I believe that it is absolutely critical right now to invest in solutions that help protect the lives of moms and babies." Mahmee, founded in 2014, offers an online platform that allows women to track their health and the health of their child after giving birth. Its stated goal is to "close the gaps" in maternal and infant care.“Technology’s not going to save the world, it’s not going to save the maternal health care industry,” says Mahmee CEO Melissa Hanna.
