Ukrainian troops have regained control of the facility.Hours after addressing the United Nations Security Council, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a scathing critique of the institution and said Russia abuses its participation in international forums.“The U.N. Security Council exists and security in the world doesn’t,” Zelensky said in a video posted late Tuesday night to Telegram, echoing his earlier criticisms that the U.N. is useless if it cannot rein in Russia.“Admit it if there is nothing you can do besides conversation,” Zelensky had said during Tuesday’s meeting of the Security Council, where Russia holds one of five permanent seats and therefore wields veto power.Moscow’s representative to the U.N. used the same meeting to claim that Ukrainian “Nazis” rather than Russian troops are committing war crimes — furthering Russia’s false narrative of a “special operation” that is saving the Ukrainian people. Instead, he said, Russia “tries to block everything constructive and use global architecture in order to spread lies and justify the evil it does.”Russian-held areas and troop movementBELARUSRUSSIAPOL.ChernihivSeparatist-controlledareaKyivLvivKharkivUKRAINEMariupolOdessaROMANIA200 MILESControl areas as of April 5Sources: Institute for the Study of War,AEI’s Critical Threats Project, Post reportingTHE WASHINGTON POSTRussian-held areasand troop movementBELARUSRUSSIAChernihivPOLANDChernobylKyivSumyLvivKharkivUKRAINESeparatist-controlledareaOdessaMariupolBerdyanskROMANIAKhersonSea ofAzovCrimeaAnnexed by Russiain 2014100 MILESActive nuclear power plants with power-generating capabilitiesBlack SeaControl areas as of April 5Sources: Institute for the Study of War, AEI's Critical Threats Project, Post reportingRussian-held areasand troop movementBELARUSRUSSIAChernihivPOLANDChernobylKyivSumyLvivKharkivSeparatist-controlledareaUKRAINEMykolaivMariupolBerdyanskKhersonROMANIAOdessaSea ofAzovKhersonCrimeaAnnexed by Russiain 2014Active nuclear power plants with power-generating capabilitiesBlackSeaControl areas as of April 5100 MILESSources: Institute for the Study of War, AEI's Critical Threats Project, Post reportingHe stayed away from social media, so he didn’t see the tweets from the head of the Russian space agency suggesting that the International Space Station might crash into the ground, or even leave him behind.NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei learned from his wife that Dmitry Rogozin was using Twitter to spew out all sorts of bombastic rhetoric about the future of the long-standing partnership between the United States and Russia on the space station, amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that followed. In his first public comments since returning to Earth last week after a record-breaking 355 days in space, Vande Hei said Tuesday that he was never worried about his safety on the station or on the Russian spacecraft that flew him and two cosmonauts home. Some of the following images may be disturbing because of their graphic content.Heidi Levine, a photographer on assignment for The Washington Post, returned to the Kyiv suburb of Bucha on Tuesday and found the city’s streets and houses still bore evidence of the recent massacres there. Millions of Ukrainians have been forced to leave their homes, and more than 4.2 million Ukrainians have left the country as of April 3, according to the United Nations.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged Russian civilians in a video to seek out the truth about Moscow’s attacks on Ukraine as images of people lying dead in streets and bodies dumped in mass graves flashed across the screen.“Your president stands accused of committing war crimes,” Johnson said in Russian. Austin said that training being provided to Ukrainians already in the United States could also be useful know-how to aid Kyiv in its conflict. In an angry response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the United States, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations countercharged that Ukrainian “Nazis” were responsible for war crimes, not Russian troops.Addressing Zelensky directly by his first name and Russian patronymic, Vasily Nebenzya said, “We place on your conscience the ungrounded accusations against the Russian military, which are not confirmed by any eyewitnesses.”“You told us there were no Nazis in Ukraine, but we know that not only are they there, but they are running Ukraine … you simply pretend not to notice,” he said.Putin says he will ‘denazify’ Ukraine. “This is from a country that criticized the council that it had the audacity to criticize its soldiers in Afghanistan,” Nebenzya said.In October, the Biden administration officially rejoined the council. The latest: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the U.N. Security Council to seek “full accountability” for the actions of Russian forces in Ukraine, accusing them of the “most terrible war crimes” since World War II.The fight: Russian forces continue to mount sporadic attacks on civilian targets in a number of Ukrainian cities.
